About Letterlings®
Letterlings began as a visual idea for making abstract letters feel more familiar. Feedback from specialists, educators, parents and children continues to shape how the Letterlings grow.
Where Letterlings began
The first seeds of Letterlings grew out of work on a Swiss German alphabet matching game. While exploring ways to connect familiar vocabulary with letter shapes, the idea became bigger than a single game: what if the letter itself could take on the familiar features of the thing it represents?
That question became Letterlings — letter characters that can use familiar disguises while keeping their recognizable shape. The project is now developing across books, classroom materials, activities and multiple languages.
People behind the English Letterlings
The roles below describe different kinds of contribution. Letterlings remains a Lighthouse Pages project, while specialist and educator feedback helps challenge and refine individual decisions.
Creator of Letterlings®
Alina has a background in psychology and Human-Computer Interaction and works across research, UX and visual design. She created Letterlings through Lighthouse Pages and develops the concept, imagery, products and multilingual adaptations.
Swiss German speech-language pathology feedback
Christina is a speech-language pathologist in Switzerland. Her feedback has helped shape the Swiss German ABC-Memori, including word selection, speech sounds, age-appropriate vocabulary and how individual words and letters work for young Swiss German-speaking children.
English speech-language pathology feedback
Cassandra is a Clinical Assistant Professor and speech-language pathologist. Her feedback has helped shape decisions around the English Letterlings, including preschool letter learning, letter sounds, vocabulary and age-appropriate presentation.
How Letterlings develop
Letterlings are not produced by simply translating one fixed alphabet. Each language raises its own questions about sounds, vocabulary, regional usage, child familiarity and visual fit.
The aim is to combine a consistent Letterlings world with careful language-specific choices — and to seek the right expertise when those choices need specialist input.
Visual concept and art direction by Alina Gasser. Imagery is created using generative AI tools and individually refined for Letterlings publications and materials.
